Finnish Partners and Business Oulu organized a breakfast seminar in Oslo, 17 of November 2016.

The subject for the seminar was “Digitalization of products and services – Digitalization DNA”. We hosted companies from Finland, UK and Norway who presented latest digital business case stories and discoveries of the new and existing products.

Mr Jan Grønbech gave a brief look into the future emphasising the urge to disrupt current business and industries or be disrupted and taken out of business faster than we could imagine: “Innovation frequency used to be in the cycle of decades in early 20th century and for our parents.  Last few years we are experiencing this cycle being even weekly for our children”

There are already several industries that have been disrupted:

Who wants to pay for a hotel besides the variety of options AirBnB is offering?

Within a few years, trams and trains will be operated without driver and the same will be with cars. The last generation who would need a driver’s license is born in year 2004.

And you should not encourage your children to become accountants – we won’t need them in the future. Do encourage them to explore any health-related personal service.

One of the major disruptions is expected within energy industry. In year 2025, the oil price is expected to stabilise under 5 USD. Why? Big car producers like Toyota, Ford and Renault promise that there will be no more production of fuel based vehicles. Almost all cars will be running on electricity.

Can you imagine how the public transportation will look like, when nobody can or wants to drive anymore?

The presentations of Finnish tech-companies from Oulu, Silicon Valley of Europe, followed. The City of Oulu is the capital of northern Finland and the fastest growing region in Finland. The Oulu Region is well known for its technology hosting two science parks: Technopolis Plc, Scandinavia’s first science park, and Medipolis Ltd., as well as a technology center, Ii Micropolis Ltd. The region is home to many hi-tech companies, such as Nokia, and the sector currently employs over 10,000 people. There are several research institutes, including VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the University Hospital. There is also the multidisciplinary Oulu University of Applied Sciences.

Business Oulu  gave us an update on the latest development of 5G standard which is expected to nourish even faster emerging of new businesses.

”It goes without saying that there will be significantly increasing wireless data demand. Existing mobile technologies will not be able to provide the capabilities to meet market demands beyond 2020. 5G will meet that demand, and also provide storage capable cell networks and much lower latency. All this means more efficient connectivity, especially in dense locations.” – Janne Mustonen, Key Account Director for ICT and Nano at Business Oulu.
